The Boy Solange Says Namibian Artists Are Losing Their Drive
Namibian DJ Theboy Solange has sparked conversation after sharing her thoughts on the current state of the local music industry.
During a recent interview, Solange was asked whether artists are losing their love for the craft and if music is still being created with meaning and passion.
Her answer? A candid one.
“I don’t know what’s going on in the music industry,” she said. “There’s just no drive. There’s no ambition. There’s no ‘I need to make it.'”
According to Solange, the issue isn’t necessarily that artists aren’t releasing music. In fact, she believes many artists are dropping songs regularly. The problem, she says, is the lack of intention behind those releases.
“I feel like as an artist, you need to drop a song thinking, ‘This song is going to take me out of the hood.’ Even if it doesn’t, that should be your intention.”
The DJ also questioned the effort some musicians put into promoting their work, noting that many songs are uploaded online without a clear marketing strategy or rollout plan.
“You didn’t push. You didn’t do anything. You expect people to just come listen to your music.”
For Solange, success in today’s music industry requires more than talent alone. She believes artists need to focus on marketing, branding, and showing up professionally if they want to build lasting careers.
“I feel like we lack marketing intention and brand value. People just don’t want to show up as how they want to make it.”
Her comments have since sparked debate among music lovers and industry observers, with some agreeing that branding and promotion are often overlooked, while others argue that artists face challenges such as limited resources and industry support.
One thing is certain: Solange’s remarks have reignited an important conversation about ambition, strategy, and what it takes to succeed in Namibia’s music industry.
